You are without a doubt, very exited now that you have bought your brand new boat! You should be! The very first thing you will want to do is celebrate! After this major purchase, you will want to enjoy it with your family and friends.
Before yanking it off to the lake, you will want to be prepared. If this will be your first boating experience, you will definitely want to learn a lot more about it. While boating is a lot of fun, there are a number of things you will need to know to maintain it, be safe, and not floating off while you aren’t looking.
There are a number of safety courses available in most places. Under certain circumstances they may even be required before you put your boat on the water.
One other aspect you need to consider if it wasn’t taken care of during your boat purchase, are the legal requirements in the jurisdiction you putting your boat on the waters of. Often, you will find you need to get a new title for the boat, and possibly the trailer as well. They will probably also require a registration, and have those numbers affixed to each. Some jurisdictions will charge sales tax at this time, and may also require liability insurance.
The first time you have your boat in the water, it would be very wise to have a boater with you that is familiar with your type of boat, at least if you have never boated before. You should get good practice maneuvering the boat in as many situations as you can find. Don’t start fast, work yourself up to it and remain safe. Don’t forget loading the boat on the trailer and docking it as well. With practice, you should have it all down pretty good shortly, however remember that the best skills are built over years of experience. Stay safe.
You will also want to practice very slowly maneuvering your vehicle with the trailer backing and going forward. This makes it possible to stop before jackknifing.
Boating can be great fun, and bring you to many things you can do and see. It’s a matter of freedom that you will feel as you glide across the water. While this maybe your first boat, you will find that now you and your family have an all new way of rest and recreation.
